Concrete Pads

A poured concrete pad is the premium foundation option for metal buildings. It provides a flat, solid, moisture-resistant surface that supports heavy loads and lasts for decades.

Best For:

  • Enclosed garages and workshops
  • Commercial and industrial buildings
  • Barns with interior stalls or work areas
  • Any building where you want a clean, finished floor
  • Properties in wet or clay-heavy soil conditions

Concrete Pad Specifications:

  • Thickness: 4 inches minimum for carports, 6 inches for garages and workshops, 8 inches for heavy commercial use
  • Reinforcement: Wire mesh or rebar for crack resistance
  • Base: 4-6 inches of compacted gravel beneath the concrete
  • Slope: Slight crown or slope for drainage
  • Expansion joints: Cut every 10-12 feet to control cracking

Gravel Pads

A compacted gravel pad is the most popular and cost-effective foundation for open-sided carports and shelters. It provides good drainage, a reasonably level surface, and enough stability for most residential and light commercial applications.

Best For:

  • Open carports and vehicle shelters
  • Temporary or semi-permanent installations
  • Budget-conscious projects
  • Areas with good natural drainage

Gravel Pad Specifications:

  • Depth: 4-6 inches of crushed stone on compacted earth
  • Material: Crushed limestone, granite, or recycled concrete (not round river rock)
  • Borders: Optional landscape timbers or concrete curbs to contain the gravel
  • Compaction: Mechanically compacted for a firm, level surface

Cost Comparison

A concrete pad typically costs $4-$8 per square foot installed, depending on your region and site conditions. A 24x30 pad (720 square feet) would cost approximately $2,900-$5,800. A gravel pad for the same area typically costs $1-$3 per square foot, or $720-$2,160.

While gravel is significantly cheaper upfront, concrete adds long-term value, provides a cleaner workspace, and is required for some building permit applications.
