Planning Your Metal Horse Barn

A well-designed horse barn provides safe, comfortable shelter for your horses while making daily chores like feeding, cleaning, and grooming as efficient as possible. Metal horse barns offer significant advantages over wood-frame barns — they are fire-resistant, termite-proof, low-maintenance, and typically cost 40-60 percent less to build.

Barn Styles for Horses

Raised Center Aisle (Carolina Barn)

The raised center aisle barn is the most popular style for horse operations. It features a taller center section flanked by lower lean-tos on each side. The height difference creates a natural ventilation channel — hot air rises into the center section and exits through vents at the ridge, while fresh air enters through the lower side openings. This passive airflow is critical for horse health.

Continuous Roof Barn

A continuous roof barn has a single roofline spanning the entire width of the building. Stalls, aisles, and storage are arranged under one roof. This style is simpler and more affordable than a raised center aisle, but requires more attention to ventilation design since there is no natural stack effect.

Stall Design

Standard horse stall dimensions:

  • Standard horse: 12x12 feet (minimum)
  • Large horse or stallion: 12x14 or 14x14 feet
  • Foaling stall: 14x14 or 16x16 feet
  • Pony: 10x10 feet

Stall walls should be a minimum of 8 feet tall to prevent horses from reaching over. Dutch doors or sliding doors provide convenient access while allowing horses to look out when the top half is open.

Aisle Width

The center aisle should be a minimum of 12 feet wide to allow horses, wheelbarrows, and small equipment to pass safely. For barns where tractors or trucks need access, consider a 14-16 foot aisle.

Ventilation

Proper ventilation is the single most important health consideration in a horse barn. Poor air quality leads to respiratory problems, which are a leading cause of illness in stabled horses. Key ventilation elements include:

  • Ridge vents along the roofline for hot air exhaust
  • Eave vents or open sides for fresh air intake
  • Windows or Dutch doors in each stall for cross-ventilation
  • Minimum ceiling height of 10 feet in stall areas

Common Barn Layouts

  • 4-stall barn (36x36): Two stalls on each side of a center aisle, with tack room and feed room at one end
  • 6-stall barn (36x48): Three stalls per side, center aisle, tack and feed rooms
  • 8-stall barn (36x60): Four stalls per side, center aisle, multiple storage rooms
  • 12-stall barn (42x72): Six per side, wide aisle, wash rack, office, and multiple storage areas

  • Tack room with climate control for leather preservation
  • Feed room with rodent-proof storage
  • Hay loft or adjacent hay storage building
