Anchoring is one of the most critical aspects of metal building installation. A properly anchored metal building can withstand high winds, heavy rain, and even seismic activity. Ground anchors, also called earth anchors or auger anchors, are used when installing a metal building on a dirt or gravel surface. These heavy-duty screw-type anchors are driven into the ground and attached to the building's base rails. They provide strong holding power in most soil types.
Ground anchors are the most common anchoring method for residential carports and garages installed on unpaved surfaces. Most metal buildings require anchors every 5 feet along the base rails.
When installing a metal building on a concrete pad, wedge anchors or concrete bolts are used. These anchors are drilled into the concrete slab and secured with nuts and washers. Concrete anchoring provides the strongest hold and is recommended for certified buildings in high-wind zones.
For buildings installed on asphalt surfaces, specialized asphalt anchors or rebar pins can be used. These are driven through the asphalt and into the sub-base material. Asphalt anchoring is less common but works well for commercial parking lot carports.
Your local wind speed rating determines the minimum anchoring requirements for your metal building. Buildings in coastal areas or tornado-prone regions may need additional anchoring points, thicker gauge steel, and engineering certification.
