How to Prepare Your Site for Metal Building Installation

Proper site preparation is the most important step before your metal building arrives. Here is exactly what you need to do to ensure a smooth, problem-free installation.

Site Prep Makes All the Difference

Your metal building is only as good as the surface it sits on. Whether you are installing on a concrete pad, gravel, asphalt, or bare ground, proper site preparation ensures your building is level, stable, and protected from moisture and settling for decades to come.

Step 1: Choose Your Surface

There are four main surface options for a metal building installation:

  • Concrete pad: The gold standard. A properly poured concrete pad provides the most stable, durable, and moisture-resistant foundation. We recommend a minimum 4-inch thick pad for carports and 6 inches for garages, barns, and commercial buildings.
  • Gravel pad: An excellent and affordable alternative to concrete. A compacted gravel pad (4-6 inches of crushed stone on top of compacted earth) provides good drainage and a level surface. This is the most popular option for carports and open-sided structures.
  • Asphalt: Existing asphalt driveways or parking areas work well as a foundation. Make sure the surface is in good condition without major cracks, heaving, or soft spots.
  • Dirt or grass: The least recommended option, but acceptable for carports in dry climates. The ground must be level and compacted. Be aware that moisture and settling can be issues over time.

Step 2: Level the Site

Your site must be level within 3 inches across the entire footprint of the building. Our installation crews can make minor adjustments with shims, but significant grade changes need to be addressed before they arrive. If your site has a slope, you may need to bring in fill dirt, grade the area, or build a retaining wall.

Step 3: Ensure Proper Drainage

Water is the enemy of any building foundation. Make sure your site drains away from the building pad on all sides. For concrete pads, we recommend a slight crown (higher in the center) or a gentle slope toward one side to prevent water from pooling inside the building.

Step 4: Check Local Requirements

Before any work begins, check with your local building department about permits, setback requirements, and zoning restrictions. Most jurisdictions require a building permit for enclosed structures (garages, barns) and some require them for open carports as well. We provide engineer-certified drawings that meet or exceed most local building codes.

Step 5: Clear the Area

On installation day, make sure the site is completely clear of vehicles, equipment, debris, and obstructions. Our crew needs access from all sides of the building footprint plus room for their delivery truck. Remove any low-hanging branches, overhead wires, or other obstacles that could interfere with the installation.

Step 6: Mark Utilities

Call 811 (the national utility locator hotline) at least a week before your installation date to have underground utilities marked. This is free and ensures that anchor installation does not hit buried gas, electric, water, or cable lines.
