A side-entry metal building is oriented so that the primary access point is on the long side of the building rather than the short end. Instead of driving straight into the narrow end, you enter from the wide side, which provides a wider opening and different layout options for your property.
Side entry is ideal when your building site runs parallel to a driveway, road, or property line. If you have a long, narrow lot or the building will sit along a fence line, side entry allows you to position the building efficiently without needing a deep setback for vehicle approach.
A side-entry building's access opening spans the full length of the building, providing a much wider area for entering and exiting. This makes it easier to maneuver large vehicles, trailers, and equipment in and out.
With a side-entry layout, you can add doors on both long sides for drive-through capability. This is especially useful for farm equipment — drive in one side, park, and exit the other without backing up.
Enclosed side-entry garages feature one or more roll-up doors on the long side of the building. This creates an interior space where vehicles are parked parallel to the building's length rather than perpendicular to it. The result is often a more efficient use of space, especially for longer vehicles like trucks, vans, and work vehicles.
You do not have to choose one or the other. Many customers add doors on both the side and the end for maximum flexibility. A common configuration is a primary side-entry roll-up door for vehicles, with a walk-in door on the end for pedestrian access.
