Winter Weather Prep: Getting Your Metal Building Ready for Cold Season

Prepare Now, Prevent Problems Later

Winter brings unique challenges for any building — freezing temperatures, heavy snow, ice, and moisture. While metal buildings are inherently durable and weather-resistant, a few simple preparations before the cold season ensure everything stays in top shape.

Pre-Winter Checklist

1. Inspect and Clean Gutters

Clear gutters and downspouts of leaves, twigs, and debris from fall. Clogged gutters cause water to back up, freeze, and create ice dams that can damage panels and trim. Make sure downspouts direct water away from the foundation.

2. Check Weather Seals

Inspect the rubber seals around roll-up doors, walk-in doors, and windows. Look for cracks, gaps, or deterioration that could let cold air and moisture inside. Replace any worn seals before winter arrives.

3. Tighten Fasteners

Walk around the building and check all visible screws and bolts. Thermal expansion and contraction throughout the year can loosen connections. Tighten any loose fasteners and replace missing ones. Pay special attention to trim and ridge cap fasteners, which are most exposed to weather.

4. Address Drainage

Make sure the ground around your building slopes away from the foundation on all sides. Standing water that freezes can heave the ground and affect anchoring and building alignment. Fill any low spots with gravel or dirt to improve drainage before the ground freezes.

5. Protect Contents from Moisture

If your building is uninsulated, condensation can form on the interior surfaces when warm, humid air meets cold steel panels. This moisture can drip onto stored items. To minimize condensation:

• Ensure adequate ventilation (open vents or partially open doors during mild days)
• Use a dehumidifier in enclosed buildings
• Cover sensitive items with tarps or store them on pallets above the floor
• Consider adding insulation for long-term condensation control

6. Snow Load Awareness

Know your building's snow load rating. If you are in an area with heavy, wet snow, your vertical roof design will shed most accumulation naturally. For flat or low-slope roofs in extreme snow regions, keep an eye on accumulation after major storms and clear excess snow with a roof rake if necessary.

7. Vehicle and Equipment Prep

If you are storing vehicles, boats, or equipment for the winter, prepare them before parking them in your building. Top off fuel tanks, disconnect batteries, inflate tires, and use breathable covers. Your metal building keeps the weather out, but prepping your vehicles ensures they are ready to go in spring.
